FASHION DESIGN & CREATION - GALLERY SHOW

MOTHER, DAUGHTER

Partner: Bonnie Zimmerman, my mother

Team: Anya Zimmerman-Smith

IN SHORT

Mother, daughter is a collection of handmade clothing designed and sewn by me, using fabric printed with digital paintings made by my mother. The exhibition explores how the experience of an art piece transforms as it changes medium— from digital to physical, from flat to 3D object, and then infinitely and uniquely transformed based on the wearer.

A collaboration of love.

By transforming paintings into articles of clothing, the artists invite the audience to reflect on how changing the medium reshapes the experience of an artwork. The project also explores how art can evolve from one artist to another and feel true to both artistic desires, the concept of making art tangible and part of everyday life, and how colors and shapes in paintings harmonize with the body through clothing.

Sharing the joy.

The collection was made over 2 years and culminated in a one day gallery show pop-up in San Francisco. Incorporated into the show were opportunities for the attendees to reflect and engage with the artwork through writing, photo, and drawing stations. Select pieces of clothing were also available for purchase.
